State lawmakers have passed a bill that makes it okay for little kids of any age to marry adults of any age -- as long as the parents of the children provide consent. That means 8-year-old Sally Jo can legally marry 34-year-old Bufford from the trailer park down the street.
Apparently, an overlooked clause in the bill states that anyone, pregnant or not, is allowed to marry at any age with parental consent. Lawmakers say the clause slipped through and it's obviously a mistake. Senator Sue Maddison said she's concerned that pedophiles might start flocking to Arkansas looking for prey. She fears some idiot parents might actually sign a consent form.
Lawmakers are vowing to hold a special session in the next few weeks to fix the damage. There's just one problem. The law went into effect July 31st. No weddings have taken place yet. It's Arkansas. Just give it time.
